While putting this post together I learned a bunch about what is and isn’t considered a mantra, what the difference is between a mantra and an affirmation, and the history of mantras. As always, I’m sharing what I learned with you today!

A MANTRA CAN BUILD SELF CONFIDENCE

We will be talking today about how to properly create and use a self confidence mantra. Mantras come in many varieties and types, and they can be very personal, which means that you can get creative with your particular self confidence mantra.

SO, WHAT IS A MANTRA ANYWAY?

The modern definition of the word mantra is “a statement or slogan repeated frequently.” That’s easy enough to wrap your head around, right?

To really understand mantras and how they work though, I think it’s helpful to understand the historic, ancient meaning of the word Mantra.

The earliest mantras were written over 3500 years ago in Vedic Sanskrit, in India. These mantras ever since have been strongly tied to religion and spiritual practices such as Budhism and are thought to be the root of all modern religious speech including prayers, hymns, and chants. In Sanskrit, the word mantra translates to “instrument or tool of the mind”.

A mantra is meant to be words, or sacred sounds used in meditation, to change the vibration of the body and mind.

No worries if you aren’t particularly spiritual, using a mantra can instead be a personal thing, or maybe it just might raise your spiritual vibration with the universe a little bit higher. I don’t think that could hurt. People from Christian, Pagan, and all other spiritual beliefs use mantras in some way. It might be in repeated prayers or songs that are sang at church. It might be spellwork, or chants. All of those things are designed after the ancient mantras of Sanskrit.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MANTRA AND AN AFFIRMATION?

Mantras, as described here, are phrases or sounds used within a spiritual practice such as meditation or prayer, meant to connect the body and mind with a higher power. You’ll often see mantras used in yoga or meditation practices, and they are often not words. Things such as the common, “Ohm” are considered mantras. These are words in other languages, but for some it’s the use of the sound that does the work.

Alternatively, we sometimes use the word mantra to describe what should actually be called an affirmation.

Affirmations are generally full statements that we can use to connect with ourselves or the universe in a positive way. Sometimes the words Mantra and Affirmation are used interchangeably. I don’t know that that is correct, or even proper. For those that use mantras as a spiritual practice, calling an affirmation a mantra could even be seen as offensive. So be careful.

My personal view on this is that what you call it isn’t as important as what you do with it. Choose a self confidence mantra or an affirmation for confidence and call it whatever. Just be sure that you use your new mantra .

What I’m actually sharing with you today, now that I understand that, will be Positive Affirmations for building self confidence.

EXAMPLES OF AFFIRMATIONS AND MANTRAS TO BUILD SELF CONFIDENCE

Since Mantras are so strongly linked to spiritual practices, and I am not a spiritual expert, I will defer elsewhere for examples of self confidence mantra sounds.

WHAT ELSE CAN I USE MANTRAS FOR?

Mantras can be used to gradually and gently make big changes in ourselves.

Mantras for self-love are popular. Who wouldn’t want to improve that? Acceptance is another theme found in many mantras. Mantras can help people to push away anxiety and worry too.

When I’m going through a particularly rough patch with anxiety, I often use a mantra in the morning, so that I can avoid that morning anxiety that can ruin my day. I say, “I am strong and today will be lovely”. It’s simple. and it works for me.

WHY DO MANTRAS WORK?

Science tells us that silently or verbally repeating something can quiet the part of the brain that is responsible for worry. When you are actively repeating a mantra or affirmation, you won’t be able to ruminate about your last relationship or worry about next week at work. You’ll be in the moment with your mantra.

Using this information, it stands to reason that as long as the mantra you are repeating is positive, it could really be anything. It’s important that whatever mantra you choose is easy for you to remember, and pleasing to your mind’s ear.
