  2. Good lighting
  3. Desk
  4. Computer
  5. Phone
  6. Chair
  7. Printer

Your Essential Home Office Setup

Proper Space

The first thing you must do is determine where in your home to set up your office.

Location is the most critical part of establishing your home office so take some time to think this out. It would be best if you considered the following things.

  • Lighting– Having natural light is crucial not only for feeling good but for help with videos.
  • Noise – The space needs to be able to be relatively quiet so there are no distractions.
  • Internet connection – A good connection is important. You don’t want the frustration of losing your internet in the middle of an important document.
  • Phone connection – If there is a landline requirement make sure you have access for the hookup.
  • Physical space – Be sure to have enough room. You don’t want to be cramped in some corner.
  • Background – If you are doing videos of zoom calls make sure you have a pleasing background.

Good Lighting

Natural light is a crucial aspect of a home office.

Having light from a window and seeing outside will improve your mood and make you more productive.

Add a desk lamp to provide lighting over a specific task, and you will be much happier.

For the room, indirect lighting works better than overhead.

Desk

Depending on your space, a writing desk or a computer desk would work great.

Keep your desk simple, and be sure to have space around your computer for notepads, pens, phones. Unless you have a dedicated office, I will stay away from executive desks.

Take a look at this desk on Amazon, and if you don’t like it, there are many other choices.

Computer

Most people go with laptops because of their versatility. You can change locations with no trouble, so if you choose to move to another room to work or a coffee shop, you will be good to go. There are many brands to choose from; however, I like the HP 17″ for its performance and lightweight.

Phone

Some businesses require landlines, but most do not. I highly recommend using MINT Mobile for your cell phone. If you pay for the year, it is only $15 per month. I switched about a year ago, and I have no complaints. If you do need a landline, make sure your office has the connections for it.

Chair

Probably the second most crucial choice brighter after proper space in your chair. Just make sure to get something comfortable as you will spend a lot of time sitting. But, again, Amazon has many good choices.

Printer

I don’t use a printer very often, but it is essential to have one. You can go with a basic printer or get all fancy depending on your needs.
