How to Reduce Morning Anxiety by Avoiding Social Media

We know that social media is an incredibly powerful tool that connects us across continents and time zones and brings us all together. People have used social media to create networks of support, start businesses, and make new friends. Some people have met the love of their lives and long-lost relatives through social media. So this isn’t a post that is made to knock social media at all. However, there are some dark sides to social media, and one of them is that seeing social media as soon as you wake up can help to fuel your morning anxiety. How Social Media Fuels Anxiety

How is social media fueling anxiety, you ask? Ok, I’m sure you didn’t ask because you already know. Being bombarded with images of people with perfect bodies and lives can make us reflect negatively on our own. The comparison game doesn’t work well for anyone. We spend too much time looking at other people to decide our own value. This doesn’t work well for anyone. Comparison really is the thief of joy, and it can make you feel less than.

Besides encouraging us to play the comparison game, social media is often the bearer of bad news. When you wake up in the morning, what you do initially really does set the tone for your entire day. If you are inundating yourself with negative press, arguments in the comment sections, and the dismal prospects that the news so often projects, you are beginning your day on entirely the wrong foot. It isn’t that you don’t want to have a realistic view of life, of course, there is always going to be something happening that is sad or even angers you. As a routine practice though? Give yourself some space to start your morning without that garbage.

What To Do Instead of Checking Your Phone In the Morning?

So what do you do in the morning if you aren’t running straight for social media to catch up on what you missed while you slept? You could spend that time reading a book. You could meditate like you’ve been wanting to. You could spend some time doing a few quick chores. Whatever you do, make sure it is something that is going to further your progress through your day and make it go more smoothly. That is what it is really all about. Nobody wants to spend their time feeling bad because somebody else has reached another milestone, or waste time arguing over the latest political development. We do those things on autopilot, often not thinking of the impact that they make on us until it is far too late.
