2023 was a great year for me. Of course, it had its ups and downs but I’ll still remember it as a great year.

Why?

  1. My baby daughter was born in March.
  2. I started my blog in February.
  3. I managed to stay healthy and happy amongst the whole COVID-19 insanity.

With the new 2024 now a fact I am full of plans, hopes, and ideas I want to share with you. And it all starts with my goals for the year.

Hopefully, by the end of this list, you’ll have picked 22 for yourself.

How to set your goals for the year and stick to them

We’ve all made New Year’s Eve resolutions and admit it, we’ve all failed at sticking to them.

Do you know why that is? Because of all the hype around friends, the feeling of a clean slate, the promise for a new start…

And then you go for maybe a week and you’re done. Reality sets in and you forget all about your resolutions.

That’s why I don’t promise anything on New Year’s Eve.

Instead, I think about what I want to achieve during November and December and then set my goals and start to follow them after the holidays have passed. That’s what makes them more real and easier to fit into your schedule.

And eventually, it’s what makes them achievable.

A step-by-step to a successful year

22 goals may sound like a lot but a year is more than enough to achieve them all if you have the right motivation. Pretty much all you need to do is write them down so you reference them whenever you feel you’re getting off your path.

But let me make it even easier for you. Here are a few rules of thumb to follow:

  1. Separate your goals into categories – personal, family, work, etc. This would make them easier to keep track
  2. Mark them as minor or major goals. Major goals would be the ones that are harder to achieve and require you to divide them into multiple actionable steps.

So here’s what you need to do if you want to see your goals for the new year all the way through.

  1. Grab the goal planner I’ve prepared for you. It’s free once you’ve signed up for my newsletter (don’t worry, I’m not a spammer)
  2. Fill in each major goal on a separate sheet.
  3. Write down three ways how achieving this goal will change your life. If you can’t think of any, maybe it’s not worth putting too much effort into it.
  4. Think about and list the actionable steps you need to take to achieve your goal.
  5. Make it more pressing by setting a deadline for it.
  6. You can use the notes to enter a reward you’ll get for yourself when you achieve your goal.

2024 Personal Goals

Since you’re probably here looking for examples of personal goals to start the new year on the right foot, that’s where I’ll start too.

  1. Find a new hobby. I’m thinking of yoga or meditation. Or both.
  2. Read 12 books. A book a month seems like an achievable goal. That is if the kids decide to go to sleep on time in the evenings. If you’re ambitious enough, you can even go for 26 (a book every two weeks) or even 52 (one every week) books for a year.
  3. Start waking up at 5:30 AM. I am not a morning person. But having the house to myself while everyone else is still sleeping seems like a great motivation.
  4. Develop a morning ritual. My morning ritual usually includes a glass of water by the bed, a double espresso, and a bunch of time wasted on my phone. I need to change this asap.
  5. Have a kid-free spa day. Of course, I love my kids. But after living with a baby and toddler I definitely need a day of pampering to relax and recharge.
  6. Reconnect with friends. My social life has suffered greatly over the last three years and I really want to reconnect with the friends I didn’t have time for before.

Here are a few more ideas you can choose from

  • Create a bedtime routine
  • Learn a new skill
  • Stop smoking
  • Reduce drinking
  • Start a journal
  • Reduce time online or on social media
  • Create a capsule wardrobe
  • Become a minimalist
  • Create a fitness routine
  • Work toward 1 minute plank/ running 5K/ 10,000 steps
  • Drink more water
  • Keep a healthy diet
  • Travel somewhere new
  • Learn to meditate and practice mindfulness
  • Find time for self-care
  • Make a new friend
  • Get out of your comfort zone
  • Spend more time outdoors
  • Lower your stress
  • Start believing in yourself
  • Create a bucket list and start crossing it off
  • Overcome a fear

Family & Finance

  1. Create and stick to a budget. This is something I’ve been trying for so long now but I can’t seem to find a budget spread that is easy enough to stick to and complete on regular basis.
  2. (Start to) Build an emergency fund. We have some savings for rainy days but we’re nowhere near the recommended 6 months of expenses in savings. We’ll need to work on this more this year.
  3. Go on our first family vacation. Over the last three years, I have been either pregnant, or with a baby in my arms, or both. In any case, I was too tired to travel. This year we plan on going on our first family vacation even if it’s just for a long weekend.
  4. Stick to meal planning. We’ve been on and off this wagon for about a year now. I keep lacking ideas on what to cook but I plan on fixing this by creating a cooking journal with all my go-to recipes (tried recipe cards but I keep losing them or destroying them before I laminate them).
  5. Declutter our home. We did this last year but now it seems like it never happened. Especially after the Christmas holidays.
  6. Do NOT get pregnant! I got pregnant in 2018, gave birth in 2019, pregnant again in 2020, gave birth again in 2023… You get where I’m heading.

And of course a few more:

  • Eat healthier
  • Restore the romance in your relationship
  • Spend more time together
  • Pay off debt
  • Start investing
  • Spend on experiences instead of stuff/toys
  • Buy a home
  • Start saving for retirement
  • Make more shared decisions
  • Communicate your issues
  • Add a new member to your family

Blogging Goals

I cannot list goals for the year without thinking about my blog. Here is what I hope to achieve in the next year.

  1. Make the blog more personal. In my case, this means adding pictures and videos I’ve made myself of activities we’ve done at home. I’ll have to learn the basics of photography and video editing but the result will be worth it.
  2. Hit the 100 posts published milestone. This is post #53 so I’m halfway there.
  3. Reach 10,000 sessions per month. Ok, that’s a little too optimistic considering the amount of time I’ll be able to dedicate to the month but I still like to aim high.
  4. Stop procrastinating. This is one of my worst habits, I fully realize it and yet I keep procrastinating and finding excuses day after day. This needs to stop!
  5. Create a shop on my blog. Etsy is a great platform but I would love to be able to create more products and sell them on the blog instead of on a third-party platform.

And a few more goals:

  • Start a blog if you haven’t already
  • Increase the number of your subscribers to XXX
  • Reach to your audience more often
  • Monetize your blog
  • Make your first affiliate sale
  • Write a book
  • Take a blogging course
  • Create a course to sell
  • Guest post on another blog
  • Join a bloggers community

Professional Goals

  1. Return to work in April or May. Being a stay-at-home-mom was a great experience but I had a great career I actually miss and can’t wait to get back to.
  2. Get a new professional certification. Continuous learning has always been a passion of mine. So to get back on track in such a competitive sector like IT, I may need a new professional certification.
  3. Reset my career goals. I used to be a very career-driven person with a lot of goals in mind and a 5-year plan laid before me. Obviously, it was put on hold so I’ll have to revise my career goals and see if they still apply.
  4. Be proactive. Going back into my usual routine would be hard enough but to prove I’m still the perfect person for the job I may need to be a bit more proactive and take the initiative myself.
  5. Improve my time management skills. When your life revolves only around your kids for years you somehow always find time for them and rarely for anything else. I would learn to prioritize my work-life balance and improve my time-management skills to fit it all into my day.

Other work goals you can choose from:

  • Earn a raise
  • Earn a promotion
  • Start a side hustle
  • Start using a planner
  • Speak up more
  • Gain new work-related skills
  • Improve your people skills
  • Become an expert in your field
  • Improve your work-life balance

Setting goals like a pro

If you are really committed to reaching your goals and becoming your best self this year, the best way is by setting SMART goals.

SMART stands for:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound

In essence, you need to set a specific event that should happen in a predefined period. Here’s an example:

I would reach 10,000 monthly sessions on my blog by the end of 2024.

This goal meets all requirements listed above and you would know for sure if you have met your goal or not.

Examples of goals that are NOT SMART:

I would be happier this year. – not measurable

I would travel to space. – not time-bound and hardly achievable
