8 Upbeat Songs To Brighten Your Day

Music has the powerful ability to make or break a good mood.

It didn’t take me long to learn as a teenager that listening to depressing and angst-filled music that reflected my mood did not make me feel any better. As much as I love Linken Park, Nirvana, Placebo & Smashing Pumpkins, sometimes I had to put them aside for something more upbeat.

Surrounding yourself with beautiful and upbeat songs when you are feeling down can really make a world of difference. Even if it doesn’t do much to bring you up, at least it doesn’t bring you down.

I remember one summer listening to my new Smashing Pumpkins CD that my brother had given me. After a couple days I started to notice I wasn’t feeling as happy as I should considering the sun was shining, the water was warm, it was a beautiful summer week. I then looked at the name of my CD Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness.

That made sense, beautiful album with hits like ‘Bullet with Butterfly Wings’ and ‘1979’. But oh so melancholy.

I also noticed the powerful effect of music earlier this year at a pub. The band was playing lots of classics. Everyone was dancing and having a great time. Then ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana came on. The energy of the crowd changed instantly. Everyone’s dancing became more aggressive. We had to get out of there before the girl next to us elbowed us in the head.

Don’t get me wrong, I love that song and I love Nirvana. It was just interesting to see how music can affect people so powerfully and so quickly.

With the power of music in mind here are:

“Why I don’t cry when my dog runs away
I don’t get angry at the bills I have to pay
I don’t get angry when my Mom smokes pot
Hits the bottle and goes right to the rock
Fuckin’ and fightin’, it’s all the same
Livin’ with Louie dog’s the only way to stay sane
Let the lovin’, let the lovin’ come back to me

Lovin’, is what I got, I said remember that
Lovin’, is what I got, I said remember that”

4. You’re My Best Friend – Queen

“Ooh you’re the best friend that I ever had
I’ve been with you such a long time
You’re my sunshine and I want you to know
That my feelings are true
I really love you
Oh you’re my best friend

Ooh you make me live

Ooh I’ve been wandering round
But I still come back to you
In rain or shine
You’ve stood by me girl
I’m happy at home
You’re my best friend”

5. It’s a Beautiful Day – Michael Bublé

“Hey hey hey
It’s a beautiful day and I can’t stop myself from smiling
If I’m drinking, then I’m buying
And I know there’s no denying
It’s a beautiful day, the sun is up, the music’s playing
And even if it started raining
You won’t hear this boy complaining
‘Cause I’m glad that you’re the one that got away
It’s a beautiful day”

6. One Week – Barenaked Ladies

“Hold it now and watch the hoodwink
As I make you stop, think
You’ll think you’re looking at Aquaman
I summon fish to the dish,
Although I like the Chalet Swiss
I like the sushi
Cause it’s never touched a frying pan

Hot like wasabi when I bust rhymes
Big like Leann Rimes
Because I’m all about value
Bert Kaempfert’s got the mad hits
You try to match wits
You try to hold me but I bust through”

7. Splish Splash- Bobby Darin

An oldie but a goodie. It doesn’t get more light-hearted and upbeat than Bobby Darin’s Splish Splash.

“And then a-splish, splash
I jumped back in the bath
Well, how was I to know
There was a party goin’ on?

There was a-splishin’ and a-splashin’
Reelin’ with the feelin’
Movin’ and a-groovin’
Rockin’ and a-rollin’, yeah, yeah”

8. Best Day Of My Life – American Authors

“I had a dream so big and loud
I jumped so high I touched the clouds
Wo-o-o-o-o-oh, wo-o-o-o-o-oh
I stretched my hands out to the sky
We danced with monsters through the night
Wo-o-o-o-o-oh, wo-o-o-o-o-oh

I’m never gonna look back
Woah, never gonna give it up
No, please don’t wake me now

This is gonna be the best day of my life
My li-i-i-i-i-ife
This is gonna be the best day of my life
My li-i-i-i-i-ife”
