Top US Road Trip Routes for 2026

If there was ever a year to hit the open road, 2026 is it. Route 66 turns 100 this year, and the country itself is celebrating its 250th anniversary, meaning towns, parks, and historic stretches of highway are rolling out special events, restored landmarks, and centennial festivals all year long.

Travel surveys consistently show that road trips remain one of the most popular types of vacations in the United States, which makes 2026 a particularly good moment to plan that trip you’ve been putting off. The US has no shortage of extraordinary drives, from coastal cliffside highways to high-desert loops that feel like another planet.

Here are 15 of the best road trip routes to explore in 2026.

The most iconic road trip in American history just hit its 100th anniversary, and the towns along the Mother Road are celebrating in style. Car shows, neon festivals, vintage revivals, and Route 66 centennial events are happening from Illinois to California throughout 2026.

Stretching 2,448 miles across eight states, the route rewards patient drivers with retro diners, glass-tank gas pumps, and communities that have been keeping the spirit of the road alive for decades.

Pacific Coast Highway, San Francisco to San Diego

California’s Highway 1 runs along some of the most dramatic coastline in the world, with the Pacific on one side and the Santa Lucia Mountains on the other. The drive from San Francisco to San Diego covers roughly 600 miles and rewards slow travelers — pull off at Big Sur, linger in Carmel-by-the-Sea, and stop for the night in a small coastal town rather than rushing through to the next city.

This is a route that punishes anyone who tries to do it too fast.

Utah’s Mighty 5 loop

Starting and ending in Las Vegas, this circular route through Utah’s five national parks — Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches — is a bucket-list drive that covers roughly 860 miles of extraordinary desert landscape. Each park feels genuinely different from the last: the towering slot canyons of Zion give way to Bryce Canyon’s famous hoodoos, which give way to the surreal red arches near Moab.

Star-gazing in this stretch of Utah is world-class, too.

At 469 miles, the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most scenic drives in the eastern US, threading through the Appalachian Highlands from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. The fall foliage along this route — typically peaking in October — draws millions of visitors annually, though the parkway is quieter and equally beautiful in late spring.

There are no commercial trucks, no traffic signals, and a 45 mph speed limit that essentially forces you to enjoy it.

Great Smoky Mountains loop, Knoxville base

A roughly 500-mile driving loop starting in Knoxville covers the most-visited national park in the US along with some genuinely charming mountain towns. Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Asheville, North Carolina, are the most visited stops, but the real appeal is the miles of mountain highway in between — the kind of driving where the road curves through a canopy of trees and you’re not in any particular hurry to get anywhere.

Northern Arizona canyons loop from Flagstaff

Flagstaff makes an excellent base for a loop through some of the most dramatic desert scenery in the Southwest. The red rock formations of Sedona are about 30 miles south, Monument Valley is a few hours east, and the Grand Canyon’s South Rim is roughly 80 miles north.

This route covers enormous visual variety in a relatively compact area, which makes it a solid choice for anyone who wants the Southwest experience without a two-week road trip.

Pacific Northwest drive, Oregon and Washington

A Pacific Northwest road trip covering roughly 550 miles through Oregon and Washington can connect Portland, the Columbia River Gorge, Crater Lake, Mount Rainier, and the Olympic Peninsula. The Pacific Northwest has a way of delivering landscapes that don’t look real — ancient forests, snow-capped volcanoes, sea stacks rising out of the Pacific — and this drive strings them together in a logical and manageable sequence.

Natchez Trace Parkway, Nashville to Natchez

The Natchez Trace Parkway stretches 444 miles from Nashville, Tennessee, to Natchez, Mississippi, passing through Tupelo — birthplace of Elvis Presley — along the way. The route follows the original Native American trail and offers easy access to Civil War battlefields, prehistoric ceremonial mounds, and archaeological sites.

Like the Blue Ridge Parkway, it bans commercial trucks and keeps speeds low, which gives it a time-capsule quality that most US highways can’t match.

Southern New England loop from Boston

Starting and ending in Boston, this compact road trip through Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island packs serious history, scenery, and character into a manageable distance. The Freedom Trail in Boston covers key American Revolution sites, Mystic, Connecticut, offers Colonial-era buildings and maritime history, and Newport, Rhode Island, delivers Gilded Age mansions that have to be seen to be believed.

Late October brings excellent fall foliage across the whole route.

For travelers with three to four weeks and a genuine appetite for distance, the northern cross-country route through Montana, Idaho, and Washington passes through some of the least crowded and most spectacular terrain in the country. Missoula, Montana, in particular is worth more time than most road-trippers give it — a college town with a thriving craft brewery scene, access to Glacier National Park, and a downtown that rewards a slow afternoon.

California’s Majestic Mountain loop

This California loop through Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks connects three extraordinary parks in one seamless Sierra Nevada circuit. Standing atop Moro Rock in Sequoia offers sweeping views of the Great Western Divide, while Zumwalt Meadow in Kings Canyon is one of the most underrated viewpoints in the national park system.

Yosemite has removed its timed-entry reservation requirement for summer 2026, making this loop more accessible than it was in recent years.

Pennsylvania Dutch Country from Philadelphia

Less than a day trip from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Dutch Country in the Hershey area offers a genuinely distinctive driving experience through communities where Amish, Mennonite, and Brethren families still practice a traditional, low-technology way of life. Horse-drawn carriages share the road with cars, and historic covered bridges appear around bends in the route.

It’s not the kind of place that shows up on most road trip lists, which makes it worth seeking out.

Tennessee’s music pathways

Tennessee has 16 self-guided driving routes connecting 95 counties, including the Tennessee Music Pathways that trace the state’s extraordinary music heritage from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry — which marked its centennial in 2025 — through the birthplace of country, blues, and rock and roll. The route passes through Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, and dozens of smaller towns that have found their rhythm again after years of reinvention.

Memphis alone warrants an extended stop.

Cascade Range drive, Ashland to Terrebonne

Oregon’s Route 62 corridor between Ashland and Terrebonne in the Cascade Range is one of the most underrated road trips in the western US. The route covers high desert, crater lakes, glaciated mountains, small craft brewery towns, and more outdoor adventure than most people can process in a single trip.

It lacks the name recognition of the Pacific Coast Highway but offers comparable scenery with a fraction of the traffic.

Florida Keys Overseas Highway

US Route 1 from Miami to Key West crosses 42 bridges over 113 miles of ocean, making it one of the most unique driving experiences in the country. The Overseas Highway sits just a few feet above sea level for much of its length, and the view from the Seven Mile Bridge — open water on both sides — is one of those genuinely memorable road trip moments.

Key West at the end is compact, walkable, and makes a satisfying final destination.

The road that defines the year

2026 is a genuinely exceptional year to be a road tripper in the US. Between Route 66’s centennial celebrations, America’s 250th anniversary programming across historic sites and parks, and a national park system that’s making access easier for residents, the infrastructure for a great American road trip has never been better aligned.

The open road hasn’t changed — but there’s never been a better excuse to get on it.
