I don’t know about you, but whenever I think about trying to live a more eco-friendly, toxin-free, waste-conscious lifestyle, especially with a young toddler, I get a little overwhelmed.

There is so much information out there about better products, and then as soon as you find one there is someone saying it’s actually not that great.

It can be easy to get stuck in the ‘all-or-nothing’ mentality, where you feel like if every aspect of your life isn’t perfectly ‘green’, then what’s the point?

I’m here to tell you to stop thinking like that. Every little bit helps, and if there is anything I have learned along this journey (which I’m still on by the way), it’s that no lifestyle is the same or perfect!

I do my best to make little changes here and there to try and live a more sustainable lifestyle, where I’m buying toxin-free products, creating less waste, and being healthier in our daily lives!

Here are a few easy ways to make little changes that make a big difference in your home with kids and babies.

Cleaning Products

Cleaning products are one of the easiest ways to reduce the amount of toxins you bring into your home.

I know when I was pregnant this is the first area I looked into changing in our lifestyle habits.

For the last two years or so I’ve researched and tried a few different products. I think something like this takes a lot of trial and error, as well as learning as you go. Some of the products I used were better, but weren’t quite as healthy as I hoped.

Now in our home we use Attitude products! Attitude doesn’t only have household cleaning products, but also has every baby product you could need.

Not only are their products vegan, cruelty free, EWG verified, and hypoallergenic, but for every product bought they plant a tree! How cool!

Baby Products

Here is a list of baby products, some of which I have used personally, that are full of way better ingredients than most of the products chain stores sell.

Even the baby clothes from these companies are made from eco-friendly, toxin-free materials! Check out their websites to learn more about their processes.

Packaging

Another easy way to reduce the amount of waste you use and be more eco-friendly in your home is to buy reusable packaging materials.

We all know how much packaging we can end up using with kids. The amount of containers I wash is astounding.

When packing a snack for your kiddo, why not grab a reusable Ziplock bag?

When putting leftovers away, use a beeswax wrap or a silicone wrap.

Simple things like this reduce the amount of garbage by a crazy amount. It also saves you a ton of money in the long run.

If you’re looking for more eco-friendly products for yourself and your home but don’t necessarily know where to start, try a subscription to CauseBox! Personally I’ve received reusable produce bags, reusable straws and other amazing quality products handmade by local artisans. Try it here!

Thrifting

Buying used clothes and items has become somewhat of a fad lately, but rightfully so.

The process of making clothes is not exactly eco-friendly. Most of the materials clothes and other household fabrics are made of last forever. When we’re done with them, we tend to throw them away and they sit in landfills forever, when they could be used as other things or sold or given away.

ThredUp is a great place to get used and in great condition clothing, for you and your kids! You can even sell your own stuff on it, in the comfort of your own home!

Otherwise you can shop at local thrift stores. You can also shop on Marketplace or join some local Facebook groups to sell and buy used furniture and clothing, often still in great condition.

Grocery Hacks

Reusable Bags and Produce Bags

One super simple way to be more sustainable is to use reusable grocery bags and produce bags.

This reduces the amount of plastic in landfills, and in your home.

I don’t know about you, but I hate having plastic bags in the house that don’t end up getting used fast enough and just accumulate. I hate the thought of throwing them out and not know where they’ll end up.

Reusable grocery bags and produce bags are the way to go! Most reusable produce bags come with tags that have their weight on them, so all you have to do is tell the cashier to make their lives easier.

Go to Stores that Use Paper Bags

A lot of grocery stores are turning towards using paper bags instead of plastic, or only offering reusable bags and no plastic or paper at all.

I try to shop more at these stores so I know, even if I forget my reusable bags, they offer paper or cheap reusable ones.

Shop Local

The easiest way to live a more eco-friendly, sustainable lifestyle is to shop local.

Much of the food that comes into grocery stores takes a lot of energy and resources to get there. Shopping at local farmers markets supports your local farmers and families, as well as uses a lot less resources to get to your dinner table.

It can also save you money! Buying the seasonal produce that farmers sell is generally cheaper than buying the non-seasonal items at the grocery stores.

They are also healthier to eat. They are usually more ripe as they take a lot less time to package and sell.

This doesn’t have to go for produce either! Farmers markets are full of other household products and foods, from handmade fabrics to household cleaners, to other foods like cheeses and jellies.

And it can be a fun and educational trip for your little ones!

These are just a few of the many simple ways you can make a more conscious effort in your life with your babies to live a more sustainable life.

The biggest thing to remember is that living more sustainably doesn’t mean you should feel bad about using plastic or not growing your own food, or buying new things for you or your kids.

It just means changing a few things here and there, not even necessarily every time you shop.

Even if you decide to change one product in your house or buy a few items you need thrifted, you’ve made a difference!

Just do your best and don’t feel guilty. You got this mama!
